MODULE DESCRIPTION

 

Essentials of Writing module covers skills in critical thinking and reading, information gathering, audience analysis and document creation for specific audiences. It introduces students to the basic concepts, principles and strategies involved in translating specialised technical content into accessible documents for general and specialized audiences.  Special attention is paid to the skills required to analyse and apprehend the meaning behind discipline-specific language and to communicate its content to non-specialists. Students will strengthen their ability to use the informative and persuasive functions of language in the production of audience-oriented texts, and to use graphics appropriately to enhance their overall message.

 

MODULE OBJECTIVES

 

Upon completion of the module students should:

 

1.1           understand the nature of specialised written discourse;

1.2           develop the interpretive and expressive skills to translate specialised discourse into general language;

1.3           appreciate the importance of target audiences in the communication process, and

learn how to integrate written and graphic material to simplify complex technical content

 

 

2.0           MODULE OBJECTIVES
