Community Law is specie of law developed through treaties. In the case of the European Union, the law is supranational and therefore prevails over the national laws of Member States. However, in the Caribbean context the law is not supranational, but Inter-governmental. The objective of this Module is to introduce students to the historical development, principles, structures and operation of the law relating to economic communities and the integration processes. Students will be introduced to the different forms of integration and the substantive law surrounding the internal processes including the internal markets, decision making mechanisms and enforcement of decisions. A comparative assessment of the European Union and CARICOM systems will be the main focus of the module.
