This module addresses issues relating to the interaction between law and society
from a historical, political, sociological and economical perspective. It takes an
integrative approach, by studying the subject from different perspectives to get an
understanding of how the economic structure of society influences lawmaking. It
incorporates trends of law enforcement, such as organized crimes, as well as current
social and technological changes that influence the society. It is premised on the fact
that law has a critical function in all forms of social conduct. The course introduces
different theories of law, and considers the role of law in social change, dispute
resolution, governance and development.
It emphasizes that there are different legal systems based on different theories of
law; that are different functions that law serves depending on the historical context.
